- Sun Yat-sen was in the United States when the 1911 revolution broke out and learned of its success from press reports. By the end of the year he was elected provisional president.[1]
- In 1896 Sun was held for 12 days at the Chinese Legation in London, which planned to smuggle him back to China for execution. He wrote a book about it, Kidnapped in London.[1]
- Sun obtained a certificate stating he was born in the Hawaiian Islands in 1870, which served to get around the Chinese Exclusion Act. He was actually born in Guangdong in 1866.[1]
- Sun's best-known name in the Chinese-speaking world, Sun Zhongshan, comes from a Japanese pseudonym, Nakayama, given to him while he was hiding in Japan.[1]
