- Hannah Arendt was briefly imprisoned by the Gestapo in 1933 for researching antisemitism. After her release she fled Germany by night over the Ore Mountains.[1]
- At 18, Arendt began a secret romance with her 35-year-old teacher, the married philosopher Martin Heidegger. The relationship stayed unknown until a 1982 biography.[1]
- In 1940 France interned Arendt at Camp Gurs. In the chaos after France surrendered she got hold of release papers and left, one of about 200 of the 7,000 women held there.[1]
- Arendt was the first woman to be appointed a full professor at Princeton University, in 1959.[1]
- At 15, Arendt was expelled from her school for leading a boycott of a teacher who had insulted her.[1]
